An engineer was killed and three others were wounded in a bomb explosion believed to be set off by leftist rebels in southern Philippines on Thursday, the military on Friday said.

The wounded included two militiamen and a village watchman who provided security to a government road project at Upper Sepaka village, Suralla town in Mindanao's South Cotabato province when they were attacked by New People's Army (NPA) guerrillas around 7: 30 a.m. local time, said Albert Caber, spokesperson of the military's Eastern Mindanao Command.

"A brief firefight ensued following the explosion, and residents in nearby villages reported seeing two slain rebels dragged by fleeing rebels. Pursuit operations were now being conducted," Caber said in a statement.

Military officials said contractors' refusal to give in to the rebels' extortion demands may have triggered the attack.

The 4, 000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969. Endi
