Buick SUVs recalled over weak liftgates

Shanghai General Motors Co. Ltd. is planning to recall 23,309 imported Buick Enclave SUVs due to defective liftgates that may drop suddenly and hurt people nearby.

The vehicles in question were produced between August 2008 and February 2012, according to a statement released by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on Friday.

Dust may get into the gas-filled struts used for raising and supporting the liftgate, leading to lower pressures in the struts and making them potentially incapable of supporting the weight of the liftgate, according to the statement.
