The population of the European Union (EU) was estimated at 508.2 million on Jan. 1, 2015, compared with 506.9 million on Jan. 1, 2014, said the EU statistical office Eurostat on Friday.
During the year 2014, 5.1 million babies were born in the EU, while 4.9 million persons died, meaning that the EU recorded a positive natural change of its population of 0.2 million, double that of 2013, said Eurostat in a press release.
The remainder of the change was driven mainly by net migration, added Eurostat.
Moreover, the population increased in 16 EU member states and decreased in 12 in 2014. In total, the population of the EU increased by slightly more than 1 million people during the year 2014, said Eurostat.
The largest increase was observed in Luxembourg, Sweden, Malta, Austria and Denmark, while the largest decreases were recorded in Cyprus, Greece, Latvia and Lithuania.
Germany, France, Britain and Italy were the most populated EU member states, accounting for more than half of the EU population, said Eurostat. Endit
