A dead sperm whale was found near Singapore's Jurong Island Friday morning, with staff from the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum now deployed to salvage the specimen.
The museum updated its Facebook post, saying it was alerted to the sighting, and the specimen was identified by curators as a sperm whale, which is internationally threatened with extinction and recorded in Singapore for the first time.
Jailani Salleh, who works in the oil industry, found the dead sperm whale under an oil tanking jetty. He found the carcass beside a mooring boat when he was checking them as part of his normal duties. He then posted a video of the whale on Facebook, the Strait Times reported.
Sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator, can grow up to 20.5 meters in length. Although they can be found in all of the world's oceans, they are more commonly sighted in deep off-shore waters. Endi
