109 people held for urinating in public in northern India

Xinhua, June 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

In a major crackdown on public nuisance, Indian police have arrested more than 100 people for urinating in public in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The arrests were made by the Railway Police in the state's tourist town of Agra Saturday, and all were let off after a night stay in police station and after paying a fine of Rs 500 (10 U.S. dollars) each, a senior police officer said Sunday.

"We carried out a drive and caught people who were urinating around the premise. We caught 109 people. We made efforts to maintain cleanliness," Superintendent of Railway Police, G.N. Khanna, told the media.

He added: "People generally have the habit of spreading filth around the railway premises. The area which should be maintained clean most is being subjected to all kind of filth."

Though urinating in public is a crime in India, lack of public urinals often forces people to relieve under public glare. Endi
