Drone strike kills 5 militants in E. Afghanistan

Xinhua, June 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Five militants have been killed following a NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan's Nuristan province, a source said on Sunday.

"NATO-led forces' unmanned planes targeted a hideout in Mardish area of Want Waygal district late Saturday, killing five militants and injuring three others," a provincial security official told Xinhua anonymously.

A local Taliban leader named Ghulam Ullah was among the killed in the attack, the source added.

The province, bordering Pakistan, has been the scene of heavy fighting over the past couple of days as security forces have repelled militants, who tried to take control of several districts near the provincial capital Parun city, 180 km east of the Afghan capital of Kabul.

About 18 security forces and 25 militants have been killed during latest clashes in Want Waygal district, the source noted.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments. Endi
