Interview: Parliamentary exchange to boost friendship between Russia, China

Parliamentary exchange between Russia and China is helpful to boost the friendship between peoples of the two nations as parliament reflects the wide public view, a senior Russian lawmaker has said.

Both Russia and China are great nations, and the exchange and cooperation between their legislative bodies will not only enhance mutual-understanding and friendship between the two countries and their peoples, but continue to push forward bilateral ties, Andrei Klimov, deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Russia 's Federation Council, or the upper house of the parliament, told Xinhua in an interview.

As a significant part of Russia-China relations, parliamentary cooperation is at a relatively high level with a wide range of areas, and high-level officials of both parliaments have maintained frequent visits to each side, Klimov said.

Speaking of the ongoing First BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Moscow, which has brought together lawmakers from the world's major emerging economies, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Klimov said parliamentary cooperation within the group plays an important role in promoting the development of BRICS member states.

Russia hoped a specialized mechanism of parliamentary cooperation be established in the future within the framework of BRICS, he added.

The lawmaker, who has visited China many times and was deeply impressed with its rapid economic growth and profound culture, said the Asia-Pacific region is playing a conspicuous role in world politics and economy, while China is playing a key role in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.

"The world has a lot to learn from China, and I am considering learning the Chinese language to better understand the country and its culture," said Klimov.

At the invitation of Chairwoman of Russia's Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin, top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang is paying a visit to Russia to attend the BRICS parliamentary forum and a meeting of the parliamentary cooperation committee of China and Russia.
