University of Burundi reopens campuses

Xinhua, May 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The University of Burundi has called on its students to return to campuses as of Monday after its closure for more than three weeks "for security reasons."

"As recommended by the Burundian National Security Council, campuses of Kamenge, Kiriri in the capital Bujumbura, and Zege in the central province of Gitega will be reopened this Monday at 14:00 local time (1200 GMT)," said the university's president, Gaspard Banyankimbona, in a statement released on Sunday evening.

Students who fail to return before 18:00 local time (1600 GMT) on Thursday would have their rooms reallocated to other needy students, he added.

Banyankimbona also asked students and the university staff to "resume academic activities without delay," warning of cancellation of stipends, food rations and the right to room allocation, as well as academic sanctions, if they fail to do so.

The campuses of the University of Burundi were closed on April 30, four days after protests were staged against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term in office. Endi
