1st LD: 1 killed in train derailment in northern India

At least one person was killed and several others injured in a railway mishap in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official said on Monday.

"The mishap happened when eight coaches of an express train derailed in the state's Kaushambi district. While one person died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious," he said on condition of anonymity.

The Muri Express was traveling to the northern city of Jammu from the eastern state of Jharkhand when the incident happened.

Local TV channels showed footage of rescuers pulling out passengers trapped inside the derailed coaches.
