The Nansha New Area was designated a state-level new area in September 2012. It is the sixth such area, following the Pudong New Area in Shanghai, Binhai New Area in Tianjin, Liangjiang New Area in Chongqing, Zhoushan Archipelago New Area in Zhejiang Province and the Lanzhou New Area in Gansu Province.
By 2050, the area is expected to reach the status of Hong Kong in terms of economic development, social construction, environment and globalization.
