Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo nominates new chief justice

Xinhua, May 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on Friday nominated Sophia Akuffo, a Justice of the Supreme Court, as Ghana's next Chief Justice.

Justice Akuffo, a senior member of the Supreme Court, will be the 13th person to hold that important office if approved by parliament.

Akufo-Addo said he had no doubt that Justice Akuffo would be a worthy successor to Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, who retires on June 8, and uphold the independence of the judiciary.

He said Justice Akuffo had been one of the leading lights of the Supreme Court since her appointment 22 years ago, and her contribution to the work and growth of Ghana's jurisprudence had been extensive.

"I expect discipline, fairness, integrity and the continuing modernization of judicial activities to be the hallmarks of her tenure as Chief Justice, if she is so endorsed by the constitutional bodies," he told the media at the Flagstaff House in Accra. Endit
