EU, US hold urgent talks on possible expansion of ban on in-flight laptops

Xinhua, May 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

European governments held urgent talks with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday, discussing a possible expansion of ban on laptops on commercial aircraft to the United States from some European countries, media reported.

European Commission transport spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen confirmed the talks, but said the European Union (EU) had no new information about a specific security concern that prompted the proposal, according to the reports.

It was reported that DHS planned to organize a ministerial level telephone conference on Friday afternoon with France, Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.

In March, the United States announced laptop restrictions on flights originating from 10 airports including in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey in fear that a concealed bomb could be installed in electronic devices.

The expansion of the ban on in-flight laptops and tablets now will affect planes from the EU, said the reports. Endit
