Albania mulls construction of three pipelines under TAP project

Xinhua, March 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

Albania is mulling the idea to build three branches of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) in the country in the framework of the gas master plan aimed at Albania's gasification, ministry of energy here said Wednesday.

These three lines are seen as priority investment projects, Energy Ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, these projects include the first line that will connect Fier station with Vlora power plant, south of Albania, second line running from Fier to Ballsh and the third transmission line from Tirana and Durres, central Albania.

These projects are foreseen to be implemented in the period of 2018-2020.

Director of Hydrocarbons at the Ministry of Energy, Dritan Spahiu, told local media Wednesday that the main investor may be the newly created state-run company AlbGaz, other companies or they can be built by taking loans from international financial institutions.

TAP is a part of the Southern Gas Corridor which is one of the priority energy projects for the European Union.

TAP project envisages transportation of gas from the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas and condensate field to the EU countries.

The TAP will be 878 km in length, 215 km of which is to pass through Albania, 550 km through Greece, 105 km through Adriatic Sea, and 8 km through Italy. Enditem
