Xinhua, March 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

Slovakia registered more than 5 million tourists home and overseas in 2016, figures released by Slovak Statistics Office showed on Wednesday.

"The figure was 16 percent higher on a yearly basis. Domestic Slovak holiday-makers made up roughly 60 percent of the total," Slovak Transport and Construction Minister Arpad Ersek said.

Slovakia also drew more than 2 million foreign travelers, marking the first time that threshold was exceeded. Bratislava was their most-visited region.

"We need to keep up the momentum, continue to promote our country effectively and continue to improve the level of provided services. Every happy visitor will want to come back to Slovakia," added Ersek.

Slovakia was most popular among Czech tourists, followed by Poles, Germans, Hungarians and Austrians. The number of overnight stays also posted a record high. Enditem
