Policeman killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir militant attack

Xinhua, January 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

A policeman was killed after militants attacked police party in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Sunday.

The attack was carried out on Saturday evening at Chowgul Handwara, about 75 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening militants fired upon a police party who were checking vehicles on the road," a police official said. "A police constable was critically wounded in the attack but succumbed while being taken to a nearby medical facility."

Reports said militants fired from a vehicle after policemen gestured it to stop. The militants managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness, police said.

The attack created panic in the village.

Soon after contingents of Indian police and paramilitary were rushed to the spot to nab the militants. However until late no arrests were made.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. Endit
