Uganda finalizes plans to revamp national airline carrier

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has said the country has finalized plans to revamp its national airline carrier in a bid to save millions of U.S. dollars spent by citizens per year to travel on other carriers.
Museveni in his New Year message late on Saturday said the move to re-establish the defunct Uganda Airlines will reduce the financial "hemorrhage" to other airlines by Ugandans and those traveling to Uganda.
In June last year Museveni directed the minister for works and transport to conclude discussions with investors to revamp the airline as a matter of urgency.
Museveni said the country could save 420 million dollars citizens spend on air travel per year.
Uganda Airlines was established in 1976 but liquidated in 2001 over a more than six million dollar debt.
There has been public debate over the commercial viability of revamping Uganda Airlines in the face of stiff competition from other airlines operating in the region. Endit
