The MPs elected at the Dec. 11 early parliamentary elections in Macedonia were handed over their certificates Wednesday by the State Election Commission (SEC), local media reported.
VMRO-DPMNE party has garnered 51 seats in the elections, and the Social Democratic Union (SDSM) won 49 seats, in Macedonia's 120-seat parliament.
Following the certification of MPs mandates on Wednesday, Macedonian Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanoski is now expected to declare the date of the constitutive session.
Based on the electoral code of Macedonia, the constitutive session should be scheduled no later than Saturday or 20 days after the Dec. 11 elections.
The next step will be the president's decision to present the government mandate to the party or parties that have won the majority of seats in parliament, as local media reported.
Following this, the mandated party or coalition has 20 days to hold talks and reach an agreement for the creation of the new government.
So far, it is the VMRO-DPMNE party led by the former prime minister Nikola Gruevski that will be mandated to form the government as it has won 51 seats.
However, Gruevski needs at least 61 seats to form the government, according the electoral code here.
If VMRO-DPMNE fails to form a new government, then the mandate would go to the SDSM.
None of the main parties and coalitions has made any statement regarding the potential coalitions or talks to form the new government. Endit
