Xinhua, December 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza on Monday inaugurated two Chinese-funded projects including a digital television project and a metropolitan area network with optical fiber.

At the inauguration ceremony, Nkurunziza thanked Chinese companies Huawei and StarTimes for supporting the two projects.

"Both infrastructures will undoubtedly contribute to Burundi's development," the president said.

He pledged to promote the sector of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), saying it is "at the origin of economic development".

The digital television in Burundi will allow broadcasting of high-quality images and sounds and a wider national, regional and international coverage of the Burundi national television.

In his remarks, Charge d'Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Burundi Sun Jian said bilateral relations between Burundi and China are traditionally good and commended cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, health and energy.

Sun also announced that 5,000 tonnes of Chinese cereals are on way to Burundi to assist El Nino victims. Endit
