Albanian gov't approves amnesty

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albanian government on Wednesday approved an amnesty drafted by the Ministry of Justice to free about 1,000 convicts from jails.

According to Albania's council of ministers, the amnesty will also reduce the sentence to about 3,000 other inmates.

The amnesty will apply to convicts with up to two years jail term under sentences handed down up till Dec. 31, as well as those who have two years remaining to serve.

Aged inmates and young convicts who have committed minor offences as well as the disabled or badly ill will also benefit.

But the amnesty will not reach to recidivists, and those who were convicted of a number of serious offenses, according to government sources.

The Ministry of Justice said the amnesty is an effort to help the convicts integrate into the community life and reduce the country's inmates number.

Albania currently has around 6,000 convicts while other 3,200 people are held in custody. Enditem
