Northern Rwanda uses drone to monitor crops

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A consortium of organizations Wednesday launched an aerial drone to gather vital agricultural information for Irish Potato farmers in northern Rwanda.

It will serve 2,000 potato farmers affiliated with 20 potato farmer cooperatives called Imbaraga Cooperative Federation, located in Nyabihu, Burera and Musanze districts.

The drone technology can identify the optimal maturity of potato plants for farmers, and can also spot nutrient deficient or diseased crops.

The United States Agency for International Development, through its Private Sector Driven Agricultural Growth Project, is partnering with AgriLift, a Rwanda-based information technology company to pilot the drone-based crop monitoring technology.

AgriLift's goal is to use this eye in the sky to provide local farmers and agribusinesses with rapid information on their crops, allowing them to take corrective measures almost immediately. Endit
