Zambian leader congratulates new Gambian president

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday congratulated newly-elected president of the Gambia Adama Barrow.

Lungu said the election of Barrow demonstrates the strength and inherent value of democracy that exists in that country.

In his message of congratulation to the president-elect, the Zambian leader said Barrow's victory was a demonstration of the confidence the people have in him in leading the country to another level.

Zambia, he said, was proud of the smooth power transition taking place in the Gambia and pledged his commitment to maintaining and enhancing the warm relations that the two countries continue to enjoy.

He has since assured the newly-elected leader of Zambia's support in consolidating democracy in that country.

Lungu also commended outgoing President Yahya Jammeh for graciously conceding defeat and for offering unconditional support and the necessary political space to the new administration to move the nation forward.

Barrow, 51, ended Jammeh's 22-year reign of Gambia after elections held last week. He won 263,515 votes, or 45 percent of the total, while Jammeh finished second with 36 percent. Endit
