Iran dismisses British premier's anti-Iran remarks

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday criticized British Prime Minister Theresa May for her anti-Iran remarks at a Persian Gulf leaders meeting, official IRNA news agency reported.

Bahram Qasemi, spokesman for the foreign ministry, said that the remarks by the British prime minister escalate tension in the region.

May should have urged the Persian Gulf Arab leaders to avoid "supporting terrorism and violence in the Persian Gulf region," Qasemi said.

Addressing a summit of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain Wednesday, May said that Britain would work with Gulf states and would help them to nullify Iran's "aggressive" policies.

She assured the GCC leaders as being "clear-eyed" about the threat that Iran poses to the Gulf and to the wider Middle East.

The Iranian spokesman said May's remarks have been lip service to the GCC leaders only to sell weapons to them. Endit
