The Albanian government is planning to undertake a new initiative through which it will subsidize the scrapping of old cars and the purchase of new ones with lower emission levels, the Albanian Environment Ministry's Laureta Dibra said Friday.
Such initiatives have long since been implemented in European Union (EU) members.
Given that air pollution levels in Albania remain high, especially in cities such as Tirana, Elbasan, and Fier where the situation is very concerning, the Albanian government hopes the initiative will help improve air quality, the expert said.
This initiative is expected to to cost the state 15 million euros (16.7 million U.S. dollars), Dibra explained.
She added that the government here was revising the tax on vehicles, noting that vehicles that pollute more will pay more taxes. Endit
