Laos to host ASEAN forum on migrant labor

Laos is preparing to host the 9th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labor on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers in the region.

During the forum slated for Nov. 9-10 in the Lao Vientiane, 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss how to improve the rights of migrant workers by strengthening the legal mechanisms governing their status.

Participants will review the progress of the ASEAN Labor Ministers Work Plan for 2010-2015 as well as various action plans including the ASEAN Vision 2016-2020 and other cooperation programs with dialogue partners.

Officials will also share their experiences and suggestions regarding the protection of workers' rights in addition to practical issues relating to development in ASEAN countries.

The meeting is aimed at strengthening the capacity of ASEAN member states in dealing with issues related to labor migration, Chomyaeng Phengthongsawath, deputy director general of Planning and Cooperation Department under the Lao Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, was quoted by local Vientiane Times as saying on Friday.
