Madrid introduces speed restrictions due to pollution levels

Xinhua, October 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Madrid Local Authority activated its protocol to reduce speed limits around the M-30 ring road and access roads into the Spanish capital as the result of high pollution levels at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Madrid City Hall informs that two monitoring sites in the city have registered levels of Nitrogen Dioxide of over 180 micrograms per cubic meters for a period of over two hours, automatically activating the protocol, which reduces maximum speeds from 90 to 70 km per hour.

Meanwhile the City Hall also advises citizens to use public transport whenever possible.

The restrictions will remain in effect while contamination levels are high and it is possible further speed restrictions could be imposed if they continue.

Should pollution levels continue to increase in a week where no rain is forecast until Friday at the earliest, there is also a possibility that the circulation of cars within the M-30 ring road could be restricted to residents and commercial vehicles, repeating a situation already experienced in 2015.
