Montenegro's ruling party wins most seats in parliamentary elections

Xinhua, October 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) has won 36 seats in the country's 81-member parliament, the State Electoral Commission announced Sunday.

The electoral body adopted the final results of the Oct. 16 elections at a lengthy session that lasted until midnight, despite objections by a few representatives citing irregularities during the voting day.

Final results show that the DPS, led by former Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, won 41.41 percent of the votes and that will give them 36 out of the 81 parliament seats.

To get a majority in the parliament, the DPS will have to look for a partner with at least five parliamentary seats and that will be a difficult job given that most of the opposition parties are decisively against the idea of becoming the DPS' junior partner.

For opposition parties, the Democratic Front (DF) won 18 seats (20.32 percent), "Key" won nine (11.05 percent) and Democrats of Montenegro won eight (10.01 percent), followed by Social Democratic Party with four seats (5.23 percent), and Social-democrats of Montenegro with two seats (3.26 percent).

Besides these six parties that have crossed the 3-percent threshold, three minority parties with more than 0.7 percent of votes will also be represented in the parliament -- the Bosniak Party with two seats, "Albanians Decisively" with one seat and Croat Citizen Initiative with one seat.

According to the final results published by the State Electoral Commission in the early morning, 378,086 out of 528,817 voters cast their ballots in the elections, representing a turnout of more than 70 percent.

At a key party meeting on Oct. 26, Djukanovic already nominated Dusko Markovic, vice president of the DPS, as the new prime minister and said he himself would withdraw from official functions in order to strengthen his party as its president.

The DPS also announced at the meeting that they will be able to form the government by Nov. 11. Endi
