U.S. strongly condemns terror attack on police academy in Pakistan

The United States condemns "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack on a police training academy outside Quetta, Pakistan, the White House said Tuesday.

On Monday night, three terrorists armed with guns and suicide vests attacked the police training academy in Quetta, killing at least 60 people and injuring 117 others.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of this cowardly attack, many of whom were training to support the safety and security of the Pakistani people," Ned Price, spokesperson for White House's National Security Council, said in a statement.

A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban and the Islamic State claimed the responsibility for the attack in separate statements. Earlier, Pakistani officials blamed the sectarian group "Lashkar-e-Jhangvi" for the deadly attack.

The U.S. stands with the people of Pakistan and reiterates the commitment to support the government of Pakistan in its efforts to end the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism and to promote peace, security and stability in the region, Price said. Enditem
