Latvian defense chief files for early retirement

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Latvian Chief of Defense, Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube, has tendered resignation, asking to relieve him of his duties ahead of the end of his office term.

Graube's current term in office expires in 2018, but he will continue to perform the duties of the Latvian National Armed Forces' commander until the next chief of defense is appointed.

The president's office said on Tuesday that the Latvian National Security Council was notified of Graube's resignation letter, which he has submitted to President Raimonds Vejonis, the supreme commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces.

Latvia's chief of defense is appointed for a four-year term by the parliament at the president's recommendation.

Graube had served as Latvian chief of defense from 1999 to 2003 and from 2010 to 2014, when lawmakers reappointed him for another term in office, which ends in 2018. Endit
