Xinhua, October 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Members of the upper chamber of Belarusian parliament on Wednesday re-elected Mikhail Myasnikovich as its chairman.

No other candidate proposed to run for the post. Among the 64 senators, 57 voted for Myasnikovich.

Speaking to the senators, Myasnikovich said that he will do everything to ensure that the Council of the Republic, or the Senate, works effectively. He said he will ensure the Senate work to enhance the well-being of Belarusians, and safeguard the sovereignty and national security of Belarus.

Myasnikovich has been speaker of the upper chamber of the parliament since January 2015.

The Council of the Republic has 64 seats. Eight senators are appointed by the president. The others are elected by anonymous voting from regional parliamentarians of six states and the Minsk city.

The Belarusian Senate's elections take place every year between Aug. 25 and Sept. 13. Endi
