Botafogo beat Inter, eye Libertadores

Two-time champions Botafogo rose to fifth in the Brazilian Serie A standings on Wednesday after a late penalty gave them a 1-0 victory over Internacional.

Striker Sassa converted from the spot five minutes from time after he was brought down by center-back Eduardo.

The result at Ilha Governador put Botafogo in the Copa Libertadores places for next season with 47 points from 30 matches. Internacional remained in the relegation zone with 33 points.

In other matches on Wednesday, Corinthians rose to eighth with a 4-2 victory at Santa Cruz, Figueirense drew 0-0 at Coritiba and Chapecoense routed Sport Recife 3-0.

Thursday's fixtures were due to feature the Fluminense-Flamengo Rio derby and a clash between traditional rivals Sao Paulo and Santos. Endit
