S. Sudanese president calls for calm after rumors about his death

Xinhua, October 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir appeared in public late Wednesday to convince citizens that he is alive after rumors about his death caused tension in South Sudan and in neighboring countries.

President Kiir stepped out in a pick-up van and toured three suburbs in the capital of Juba waving to supporters.

He later told reporters that the rumors about his death were perpetuated by enemies of peace.

"The people who created this lie are not responsible for my life. So I want every body to remain calm," Kiir said.

Panic erupted late Tuesday and again on Wednesday following rumors that the head of state had died, forcing many shops and organizations to halt operations. Endit
