Zambian President Lungu seeks reelection in 2016 polls

Xinhua, June 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu said Sunday he is seeking reelection and will rule the country until 2021.

Lungu, who is seeking reelection on the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) ticket in the August 11 tripartite election said his firm belief to rule until 2021 was anchored on what he has done so far in office, according to state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

Lungu, who was speaking during a campaign rally in Lusaka, the country' s capital, said he has been a firmer believer in God and assured opposition leaders that the elections will be free and fair.

Lungu said he had discussed with police authorities on ways to improve law and order and to curb the violence that has characterized the run up to the elections between his supporters and those of main opposite contender Hakainde Hichilema.

Lungu, 59, became Zambia's president after winning last year's election. The election was called after the death of President Michael Sata last October.

Nine candidates will participate in the presidential election but the main battle will be between Lungu and Hichilema, a wealthy businessman who came second in last year' s election. Endit
