Ivanchuk wins seventh Capablanca crown in Cuba

Ukranian grandmaster (GM), Vassily Ivanchuk, won the Elite group in the International Capablanca in Memoriam Chess Tournament for the seventh time which ended in Varadero, Cuba's main seaside resort, on Sunday.

Ivanchuk, currently with 2,710 Elo rating points, secured the crown on Saturday in the Solymar-Arenas Blancas Hotel in Varadero (140 kilometres to the east of Havana), after tying with Bulgaria's Ivan Cheparinov in 57 plays which gave him 6.5 points after four wins out of five games.

His closest contender in the group, which included six GMs, was fellow countryman Yuriy Krivoruchko, with five points. However he can no longer reach Ivanchuk's score.

Ivanchuk has won the Capablanca tournament previously in the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 editions and is the only one to have won such a number of editions in the tournament.

On the last day of the tournament, Ivanchuk can calmly face Cuba's Leinier Dominguez (4) while Hungary's Zoltan Amasi and Cheparinov (both 4.5) will also face each other.

The final game of the day was supposed to be between Krivoruchko and Cuba's Lazaro Bruzon (2.5) but the Cuban abandoned the tournament on Sunday due to a fever, according to reports from the organizers. Endit
