Eurozone employment up 0.3 pct in Q1

The number of persons employed increased by 0.3 percent in both the eurozone and the wider European Union (EU) in the first quarter this year compared with the previous quarter, according to estimates published by Eurostat on Friday.

The statistics agency of the EU said compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment increased by 1.4 percent in both zones in the first quarter after 1.2 percent up in the euro area and 1.3 percent up in the EU in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Eurostat estimates that, in the first quarter of 2016, 231.3 million men and women were employed in the EU, of which 152.6 million were in the euro area.

These are the highest levels since the third quarter of 2008 in the EU, and the fourth quarter of 2008 in the euro area.

Among member states, the Czech Republic recorded the highest increases and Poland, Greece, Latvia and the Netherlands recorded decreases. Endit
