Ukrainian parliament passes legislation on judicial reform

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday has passed constitutional amendments aimed at reforming the country's judicial system, the parliament press service said.

The legislation, which was submitted by President Petro Poroshenko, was backed by the absolute majority of 335 lawmakers in the 450-seat assembly, said a statement posted on the parliament's website.

In particular, the new legislation envisages strengthening the independence of judicial bodies from the parliament, limiting immunity of judges from prosecution and increasing professional standards in the judiciary.

The implementation of the comprehensive judicial reform is one of the key requirements of the International Monetary Fund for Kiev to continue cooperation.

The justice system is seen by many local analysts as one of the most corrupted branches of power in Ukraine.

The recent survey conducted by the Kiev-based Razumkov center for political and economic studies showed that 81 percent of Ukrainians distrust the courts. Endit
