Burkina Faso's ex-ruling party head freed on bond

Xinhua, May 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Eddie Constance Komboigo, head of Burkina Faso's ex-ruling party Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP), was on Monday freed on bond.

Komboigo was detained in January on suspicion of his involvement in the September 2015 coup attempt.

He was charged for "threatening state security, complicity in assassinations, causing bodily harm and complicity in destruction of both public and private property."

Several other CDP members, among them the party's vice-chairman Leonce Kone, were equally charged in relation to the failed coup.

On Sept. 16 last year, soldiers allied to deposed president Blaise Compaore carried out a coup under the leadership of Gen. Gilbert Diendere.

After having briefly overthrown the transition government, they were defeated through a popular resistance.

Diendere, a former close aide to Compaore, and Djibrill Bassole, a former foreign affairs minister in Compaore's regime, as well as 40 other military officials are currently detained in Ouagadougou over their involvement in the coup. Enditem
