6 Bangladesh militants awarded death sentence in deadly bank robbery

Xinhua, May 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

A court in Bangladesh capital Dhaka awarded on Tuesday death sentence to six militants, affiliated with the banned outfits Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team, for staging a bank robbery last year in which at least eight people including a banker were killed.

The court found nine militants guilty for murders and robbery aimed at raising fund for their operations.

Dhaka District and Session Judges' Court Judge SM Kuddus Zaman ordered the death penalty for six, life in prison for one and three-year jail term for two others.

At least 10 members of the outfits robbed the branch of the state-run Bangladesh Commerce Bank on April 21, in Ashulia on the outskirts of capital Dhaka.

They killed the manager of the bank to get the key to the vault before the alarm was raised by the loudspeaker from a nearby mosque.

The gang detonated a bomb as they fled, chased by customers and onlookers.

An angry mob later beat to death one of the robbers while they were fleeing in broad daylight.

On December 1 last year, Ashulia police submitted two charge sheets -- one for the killings and robbery, and the other for possessing explosives. Endit
