Burkina Faso's ruling party wins majority seats in municipal polls

Burkina Faso's ruling party, People's Movement for Progress (MPP), has won majority of seats in Sunday's municipal elections, provisional results released by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) have shown.

According to results released on Wednesday night, the ruling party won 58.91 percent of the seats it contested for in 363 communes, equivalent to 11,167 seats.

Its main challenger, Union for Progress and Change led by Zephirin Diabre, got 3,051 seats in 289 communes.

The former ruling party, Congress for Democracy and Progress of ex-president Blaise Compare got 2,134 seats.

Municipal councils which were initially under the control of Compaore's party, were dissolved by transition authorities. Enditem
