Building collapses in Spanish island of Tenerife, no death confirmed

Xinhua, April 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Rescue services are still trying to confirm the number of victims after a residential apartment block collapsed in the Los Cristianos neighborhood on the Spanish island of Tenerife on Thursday morning.

The building collapsed at around 9:30 a.m.local time on Thursday morning. Three people have been confirmed injured, including a woman who has been described as in a "serious" condition by rescue services.

Although no deaths have yet been confirmed in the accident, it is thought that up to nine people could still be trapped under the rubble.

The Spanish Military Emergency Unit has sent 29 members and five dogs to help local security and civil protection services with searching for victims.

Reports of local press suggested that the accident could have be caused by renovation work which was being carried out on the ground floor. It has been stopped a fortnight ago when cracks were discovered in the building.

Witnesses said they heard a loud "bang" just before the building collapsed, some said they caught the smell of gas.

The local authority has opened a center for those affected or their family to receive psychological help. Endit
