Former Benin president to lead AU observers for Equatorial Guinea election

Xinhua, April 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Beninese president Boni Yayi has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to lead an observer mission for Equatorial Guinea's presidential elections set for April 24, Benin's public broadcaster announced Wednesday.

The choice of Yayi, according to the chairperson of the AU Commission, who was cited by the public broadcaster, was made due to his efforts in consolidation of democracy in Africa.

Seven candidates are contesting the elections, including incumbent President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who has been in power for the last 36 years. Endit
