Volodymyr Groysman becomes new Ukrainian PM

Xinhua, April 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Groysman was elected the country's new prime minister on Thursday.

Addressing the Parliament after his election, Groysman said he hoped his Cabinet will regain the trust of Ukrainians.

"I think that the new Cabinet has a chance to become the government that will improve the quality of life of Ukrainians," Groysman said.

Groysman, a 38-year-old former businessman and a close ally of President Petro Poroshenko, announced his bid for premiership on Wednesday, naming deregulation, economic growth and anti-corruption as his top priority.

Groysman's ascent to power was widely expected as he was seen as the sole candidate that could be accepted by the two major parties -- the People's Front of former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the Solidarity party of Poroshenko.

Groysman started his political career in 2002 as a deputy in the Vinnitsa City Council. He was elected as mayor of Vinnitsa in 2006, winning re-election six years later.

Groysman leaped onto national arena in February 2014 after street protests ousted former President Viktor Yanukovych, becoming a deputy prime minister and concurrently minister of regional development. He was elected as Parliament Speaker in November 2014. Endi
