Mexico sees great cooperation potential with Denmark in various fields, visiting Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said here on Thursday.

Nieto made the remarks at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen during his state visit to the Nordic country.

"We see the possibility of cooperation in such areas as innovation, energy efficiency, green technology and environmental protection," Nieto said, referring to the fact that Denmark was one of the EU countries that invested the most in Mexico.

He also noted that a very high proportion of the Mexican population are struggling with diabetes, where Denmark has the expertise to help.

Earlier on Thursday, Nieto participated in a business conference at the Confederation of Danish Industry where eight cooperation agreements in fields ranging from energy to exports were signed.

Danish exports to Mexico amounted to 3.5 billion Danish krone (530 million U.S. dollars) in 2015, a 51-percent increase compared to 2011.

According to the latest report from the Danish Foreign Ministry, there is potential for Danish exports to Mexico to be increased by one billion Danish krone (152 million U.S.dollars)over the next few years.

Nieto is on an official two-day state visit to Denmark along with his wife Angelica Rivera, the first such visit by a Mexican president to Denmark.

The couple also met with the Danish royal family and high representatives from the Danish government during the visit. Endit
