Zambia nabs 1, 339 people over drugs in first quarter of 2016

Authorities in Zambia arrested over 1,000 people in the first quarter of 2016 for various drug offences, the country's anti-drug agency said on Thursday.
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) said it arrested 1,339 people countrywide in the first quarter of the year who included 1,224 males and 115 females.
The agency said in a statement that 54 of those arrested were juveniles while 25 were foreigners.
According to the statement, out of those arrested, 501 people have been convicted while 836 cases are still pending in the courts of law.
The agency also seized 20.04 tons of cannabis, 129.4 kilogram of mirra, 24.24 kilogram of cocaine, 30 grams of lignocaine and 24.82 grams of diazepam.
The agency also recorded the largest single seizure of cocaine weighing 24.19 kilogram. Endit
