Ukrainian parliament speaker agrees to take premiership

Xinhua, April 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Groysman announced on Wednesday that he will agree to become the country's next prime minister if lawmakers approve his nomination.

"I know that the new government will accept a huge responsibility and will face a lot of challenges, but if we get the support of the Ukrainian citizens, we would do our best to steer the country out of the ongoing crisis," Groysman said in a video address to the nation, published on his Facebook page.

Among the main tasks for his cabinet, he listed the implementation of a deregulation reform, economic growth and anti-corruption.

Groysman said he had already reached a consensus with President Petro Poroshenko and major parliamentary factions over the composition of the new government.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian parliament postponed a planned voting on the resignation of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk as Groysman, who had been expected to be elected as the new premier, reportedly refused to lead the government due to disagreements with the president over the structure of the cabinet.

Yatsenyuk announced his resignation on Sunday in the wake of the country's months-long political crisis that has overshadowed reforms and could freeze vital international financial support for Ukraine.

The parliament is set to approve the new prime minister and the cabinet by the end of this week. Endi
