Over 400,000 refugees in Uganda received 30mln USD relief boost

Xinhua, April 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Over 400,000 refugees in Uganda have received a 30 million U.S. dollar humanitarian relief boost, the UN food aid agency has said.

The World Food Program (WFP) in a statement on Wednesday said the funding from European Union, Japan, U.S. and the UN's Emergency Response Fund will enable it continue providing food, cash and life-saving nutrition support.

"We can use these resources to purchase food on the local and regional market for relief support, and for treatment of moderate acute malnutrition among young children, pregnant women and new mothers," said Michael Dunford, WFP's Country Director for Uganda.

The refugee population in Uganda, already the largest the country has ever hosted, continues to grow amid ongoing crises in neighboring countries like South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

Uganda now hosts approximately 520,000 refugees, the majority of whom have arrived in the past several years and depend on humanitarian assistance.

WFP said an additional 10 million dollars is still needed to sustain the relief support for the next six months. Enditem
