Iran denies meddling in Lebanon's presidential election

Xinhua, April 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Iran's embassy in Lebanon on Friday denied allegations of meddling in Lebanon's upcoming presidential election, official IRNA news agency reported.

On Thursday, head of the Lebanese Forces Political Party Geagea told LBCI TV that the Iranian ambassador to Beirut has told a number of western diplomats to ask the Vatican to convince Michel Naim Aoun, a Lebanese politician and former Lebanese army commander, to withdraw from the country's presidential election campaign.

The allegations of Geagea are "baseless" and Iran does not interfere in the elections, Iran's embassy said in a statement on Friday.

Iran regards the presidential election in Lebanon as an internal issue of the country and based on its constitution, the statement said.

Iran will never interfere in such affairs, as foreign interference in Lebanon's presidential election would further complicate the issue, it said.

On Friday, Iran's ambassador to Beirut Mohammad Fathai also made a telephone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, denying any interference in the country's presidential election. Endit
