Namibia needs 3,000 new classrooms this year to meet demand

Xinhua, March 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Namibia's education minister says the country needs about 3,000 new classrooms this year alone.

Motivating her 12.8 billion Namibian dollars (870 million U.S dollars) budget for 2016/17 Wednesday, education minister Katrina Hanse Himarwa said school infrastructure in Namibia is in a state of disrepair.

She also said that more than 18,000 classrooms are temporary shelters, which are affecting the delivery of quality education to around 50, 000 pupils in the country.

In 2012, Namibia introduced free primary education, which was extended to secondary education in 2016.

Apart from the shortage of classrooms, Hanse-Himarwa said most schools have no access to potable water and electricity.

Although the education minister has been receiving the lion's share of Namibia's national budget, Hanse-Himarwa said there are many challenges regarding executing the capital budget. Enditem
