Xinhua, March 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Gambia has made great achievements in the fight against tuberculosis, according to health experts in the country.

"The current tuberculosis treatment success rate in the country is 90 percent, which exceeded the United Nations World Health Organization target of at least 85 percent," said Adama Jallow, Manager of the National Tuberculosis Control Programme at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on Thursday.

According to him, the health department under the ministry structured 40 TB diagnostic centers across the country, improving access to care and support to all the regions in the country.

This was confirmed by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) which has rated Gambia's TB performance programme at A2, Jallow said.

Sharmila Jah of the World Health Organization (WHO) Gambia Office said the WHO will continues its efforts to closely collaborate with governments, partners and relevant institutions in the health sector to fight against TB .

"We will fully collaborate with our partners around the world to address the existing challenges in TB control and accelerate collective action to end the TB epidemic." Jah said. Endit
