Police foil bomb attack on police station in southern Somalia

Xinhua, March 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police in Bardere town of Gedo region of southern Somalia on Wednesday foiled a bombing attempt after they safely retrieved a bomb planted in the local police headquarters, officials have said.

Mohamed Hassan, the Head of Bardere police station which is located near the border between Somalia and Kenya, told journalists his officers were able to remove the bomb which he said could have been put there by unknown people.

"We safely removed and detonated the bomb away from the station. We are yet to establish how it was put there," said Hassan.

He said the police had launched intensive search and investigations to find out if other bombs could have been hidden within the area.

Joint Amisom and Somali army captured Bardhere town last year considered as one of the few remaining strongholds of the militant group Al-Shabaab.

It is largely an agricultural town and Al-Shabaab was reported to have imposed levies on farmers to fund their operations. Endit
