Nepalese PM urges acceleration of post-quake reconstruction campaign

Xinhua, March 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday directed the National reconstruction Authority (NRA) to carry out post-quake reconstruction tasks and accelerate its drive.

Venting ire upon the delay in reconstruction efforts, the Prime Minister gave such direction here in a seminar organized by the Authority in presence of quake-hit district chiefs and local development officers.

The PM's dissatisfaction comes at a time when the country is set to mark the first anniversary of the April 25 earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people and made more than a half million homeless.

He was of view that the reconstruction should be accelerated as per the aspirations of the quake-displaced families. Being also the chair of consultation and directive committee of NRA, PM Oli said that it should not take years or a decade to rebuild the damaged houses.

Hundreds of thousands of quake victims are still living under tarpaulins and temporary shelters in different parts of 14 worst-hit districts in lack of relief packages from the government.

Though the NRA announced of distributing the first installment of housing grant to the quake-displaced families few weeks ago, it is yet to provide the cash to victims of all affected districts as per planning. The government had earlier decided to allocate Rs 200,000 in total to each completely-damaged household through three installments.

Quake-ravaged Nepal received the financial pledge of around 4 billion U.S. dollars in the Donors Conference held last June, which has allocated Rs 65 billion in total for reconstruction of housing.

But the delay in appointments of civil employees along with hurdles of acts and regulations has pushed back the reconstruction campaign, leaving the victims into miserable condition. Enditem
